Pursuing Perfection
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is one of the top pediatric institutions committed to care, research and education. Considering it's reputation and size, it was decided to take a proactive approach and find ways to provide better care, better than the superb care that is already being provided. Thus was born the concept of portals. Healthcare is one of the most paper intensive industries. The idea behind the portals is to bring all information and services to a central place for clinical staff, patient, patient family and other auxiliary resources involved in providing care. This also streamlines many processes by removing duplicate functions, decreasing the workload, more accurate data and giving access to real time and historical information. This is still a work in progress. Consider this simple scenario to get a better feel for the power behind these portals. A patient comes in for an outpatient visit that requires a day long admission. The physician is on his/her clinic rounds with a Tablet PC hooked to a wireless network, visits each patient and pulls up all the information and decides to prescribe medications. When it is time for the patient to leave, the patient goes to the pharmacy where the prescriptions are ready for pickup. This has some very obvious advantages. Nurses do not have to carry thick binders of shadow charts for every patient on clinic rounds, physicians no longer have to scribble medications and pharmacists no longer have to decipher those scribbles, the system does checks to make sure there are no glaring errors such as over doses and the list goes on. If the patients have their labs taken, they can check their lab results from where ever they are by logging on to the portal. They no longer have to wait for a call or call the clinic to get the results. They can communicate with their physicians by using the portal. This frees up valuable time of both patients and staff. The above scenarios are not hypothetical and are in fact in use. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
